Crisis is a normal, critical part of life.
Crisis occurs anytime an individual does not have the resources to cope with a stressor. Crisis is not an illness or something to be avoided, and it is not necessarily a bad thing.
All behavior reflects need. Children in crisis need help.
The type of help a child receives when they are in crisis makes a difference in how that crisis event will affect their future. Will the crisis be a setback, or will it be an opportunity to learn new coping skills and achieve greater mental health? Research supports the notion that crisis can indeed be a source for positive change:
No matter how difficult the crisis may be, if adults in the child’s environment are equipped with the knowledge and understanding of how to support children through crisis, it is possible that crisis will be the catalyst for learning and growth (Caplan,1965; Parad 1965; Parad & Parad, 1990, 2006; Roberts, 2005; Cornell, 2013).
The Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) model is designed to promote such growth and development, teaching children and young adults how to navigate the stressor and develop coping skills and adaptability. It also provides a framework for parents and professionals to map what crisis looks like for a particular child, and to focus on preventative and de-escalation strategies that can be used early in the crisis event, to reduce the risk of crisis resulting in aggression and/or violence, while also providing effective and safe ways to manage crisis, reducing the risk of injury.
